Bag O Weeds

May10

Yesterday was quite a long day…whew.  I’m still tired.  :)  Bryan and I had morning classes.  My TKD class was actually a sparring workshop type of thing.  It was ok, but I wasn’t really in the mood for a lot of sparring so early on a Saturday morning.  Bryan and I grabbed lunch then coffee before afternoon classes began.  However, I had to request instead that we go home because I started having the dreaded cramps…great.  Oh well.  Home we went.  But we didn’t stay there long.  I found an ad on Craiglist.com for some free stuff so we drove back down to north central Austin only to discover it was mostly crap.  They did have 2 aloe plants that we snagged.  Determined  not to have driven down there for nothing we made a big trip to Costco for yummy food and a few other extras.  Our freezer is stuffed to its capacity.  After all that, it was yard work time.  We weeded and weeded and then weeded some more.  We filled up an entire trash bag of just weeds.  It was crazy, and now our hands are now tender.  We sprayed some weed killer to help us out in the rock beds.  We ended up replanting the succulents and cactus we bought a couple of weeks ago.  I wanted to add some rocks to the bottom and top of the pots.  It was a long afternoon/evening.  We got back in the house close to 9 PM.  Bryan then made a too awesome meal of scallops, shrimp, and asparagus.  He’s such an amazing cook, and I’m so blessed.

I took the generalist EC-4 test on Thursday.  Out of the 5 allotted hours, I used only 3.  I left with my brain turned to mush and was mentally exhausted.  I don’t wanna say how I did on the test, because, well, maybe I didn’t pass.  It’s certainly a possibility.  :(  But I’m hopeful, and I should found out the results in about a week our less.  Let’s all hope I pass because I can’t take it for 60 days if not.  Currently, I’m taking off from studying and hope to get some much needed projects completed around the house during the next week.  If I pass the test then I’ll move on to studying for the next one.  It might just be a summer of studying.  Booo!

There’s not much else to report.  Life has been relatively quiet over here on Brazos Bend Drive.  Martial arts (all) are coming along.  I should be able to test for my blue sash in Tai Chi fairly soon, but only after a few weeks of drilling/practicing.  And I’ll be testing for my red belt in TKD on the 30th.  I might go poor with all the testings I do.  Hehe.

Here’s the only recent picture that I’ve taken:

I know what you’re thinking, but no, there are no cat pictures.  😀

It’s Mother’s Day!  Happy Mother’s Day to all the mothers that I know and love especially mine and Bryan’s.  🙂

I'm A Green Belt!

May2

Yes, finally…I finally tested…and passed.  My test went very well.  I was pretty happy with the way it turned out.  Ah, now the new material begins yet again.  :)  I’m getting pretty close to finishing up my Tai Chi sword form so maybe there’s another testing in May for me.  Well, actually there is because I’m testing for my red belt in TKD.  Wow, that’s a whole bunch of testings.  And let’s not forget about the real biggie – my teacher’s certification test that takes place this Thursday!  Whew…I’m tired just thinking about all of this.

I didn’t have TKD this morning thanks to some instructor business.  However, Wendy drove me to the Kung Fu school so that her son Nicky could take a class and see if he wants to join.  Ah…kids… He went from hugging onto his mother on the bench to not wanting to leave the building in just 30 minutes!  I was super happy that he finally inched his way into the class and started participating.  I was super proud of him because he was doing great.  I’ve never gone to a kids class before let along the Pre-K so this was quite a new experience for me.  I admire the teachers that are able to do this.  You guys have super amounts of patience.  I was asked to help just 2 kids with a stance and a kick, and was at a lost as to what to do when I asked them to show me a kick and they instead show me their “boo-boos.”  Gross!  I know I want to be an elementary teacher, but I feel it’s a much different situation.  These kids have no desks….they can become chaotic much quicker!  :)  But they are still pretty cute.

The TKD demo for Friday night got canceled due to the swine flu.  Boooo!  This hamdemic is starting to get on my nerves.  (That’s for you, Bryan)  🙂

Tomorrow is another off day for us from the Paleo diet.  It’s been another 2 weeks of strict eating, and we really deserve a day off.  What’s so awesome about this is that Holly made us some of her famous cookies which I can’t wait to devour!  I know we’re going over to Bryan’s grandmother’s house tomorrow for spaghetti.  Yummy!  I can’t wait to pig out and then feel completely horrible.  That’s the feeling that gets me through the next 2 weeks.  :)  It’s the perfect cycle.

Revision Is A Good Thing

May1

I know quite a while back I mentioned updating/tweaking my before you’re 30 list.  Well, this morning I finally did that.  I didn’t change much though I did some deleting and some adding.  Some things I had tried, like the kayak, and found that though I thought it was something that I wanted, it really wasn’t.  And that’s ok.  I also don’t see myself staying in TaeKwonDo therefore having goals for that seems pointless.  I also never expected to be doing Kung Fu/Tai Chi when I made that list.  Therefore, it feels weird not to have my goals for that on the list.  I’ve made some strides toward achieving some of the items like getting some recipes down, but I’m not all the way yet.  Other goals I’ve attempted many times with no success (picking my lips).  I don’t know if I’ll ever achieve this, but I’m going to keep trying.  So, here is the list because I know I’m the only one that remembers it.  :)  Actually, as I was editing I realized there were a few that seemed “new” to me to.  I guess I forgot that I had put them on there…opps!  🙂

iPhone Apps You Should Check Out:

Flood It:  It’s free in the App Store.  It’s a pretty cool and pretty addictive little game that’s also pretty easy to learn.  Winning is another story.  🙂

Puzzle Quest:  I should have reported this one a long time ago as I have been addicted to it for a couple of months.  It’s a role playing game where the battles consist of a game much like Bejeweled.  It’s hard to explain, but if you love role playing games then I’m sure you’ll like it.

I Have The Power Of The White Helmet!

I’m still studying.  I guess that will be the trend for a long time for me.  It’s just exhausting.  After taking the practice tests, I definitely know where my weaknesses are.  A lot of what I need to approve on is reading the questions better (geez!) and learning all the vocabulary from the English/language arts section.  I’m still pretty nervous.  Today makes one week until the test!!  :O

In martial arts news – I’m a loser!  Ok, maybe not.  I’m referring to Tuesday night when sifu Corey gave me the opportunity to test, and I turned it down.  I’ve been ready for 2 weeks now, but I finally feel ready ready.  Green belt – here I come!

I had an awesome martial arts experience last night.  Do you ever just feel like your in the zone?  Everything was going so perfect.  I went to Tommy’s class which was killer with all the planks and ab exercises.  He left no section of the body out.  After that portion of the class, I went through my material.  Then it was time to go to TKD.  Yeah, I know…after that???  Little did I know what was in store for me!  My instructor decided he was on a conditioning kick.  So after Tommy’s killer workout, my instructor had us doing cardio forever with running, and different kinds of crunches and push-ups.  By the time we got to sparring, I was beyond tired.  However,  my body just kept going.  We sparred, and I even surprised myself by being more aggressive than I usually am.  After normal sparring, a few of us point sparred for the privilege to wear the white helmet.  Yeah, I don’t get it either, but the younger students love it.  Haha…too bad for them I claimed it last night!  Booyah!  🙂

The TKD school is putting on a demo at a nearby school this Friday evening.  I will be there showing off my skills.  :)  I’ll be performing my senior brown belt form and the sword form as well as sword and adult sparring.  It should be pretty cool.

We have a sick kitty in the house!  Mallos came down with quite the fever earlier in the week.  It came out of nowhere.  We knew something was definitely wrong because he wasn’t acting like himself at all.  We took him to the vet where they said he had a high fever and some type of infection.  They gave him fluids for the fever which thankfully worked and quick, and he got antibiotics which he’ll be on for several days.  He does NOT like getting his medication.  We had to quarantine him for a couple of days to try and minimize the possibility of it spreading to the other cats.  He didn’t like this either which broke my heart.  :(  I wish there was just some way to explain to animals what’s going on sometimes or know what they’re thinking.  Thankfully, he’s feeling much better and back to his old self.

I’m trying to think of anything else of worth to report, but I’m drawing a blank.  I’m trying to avoid large crowds these days.  :)  No reason to tempt the fates and contract any type of flu.  The outbreak, if you can call it that, has lead me to do a lot of reading which actually makes me feel much more informed and thus not so terrified.  My conclusion:  It’s going to be ok people.  Don’t panic!

Oh, Bryan and I finally used his gift certificate that I bough him for Christmas to a movie theater to see Mosters vs. Aliens in 3D which was very awesome!  3D rocks!  😀

We did go and buy some plants this past weekend.  We got some cacti and succulents and some pots to put them in.  I was tired of having only a few things in the rock bed in front of the house.  However, one of the cacti that I bought is quite a ways away from moving to the flower bed just yet.  We also got 3 herbs for Bryan to grow for cooking.  I think that’s just pretty awesome.  :)  I’m happy with the way that all of our plants look though I apologize to the succulents for the huge amounts of rain they received the day after being planting.  We had to relocate them for the week so they could dry out.  I think that was enough rain to last all of our plants for a long, long time.  I don’t have a green thumb and don’t generally care much for plants, but I have to admit that I’ve enjoyed planting these.  I’m still happy that they require so little attention.  🙂

Lastly, Bryan and I have a few things that we’ve been trying to sell.  Check it out (only if you are a member of Facebook):

speaker stands

car rack (kayak rack)

printer

car stereo

and Bryan has a sword that he’s selling for like $5, but I couldn’t find a listing for it.  It would make a great accent to your pirate costume.  🙂

I Really Hope I Pass (Not Out)

April20

Here are the highlights of life since my last post.  I promise not to be so busy with studying forever…though it’s feeling life forever.  Since we’re already on the subject of studying…

Teaching Certification:

There is definitely good news in this area of my life:  I FINALLY signed up for the Generalist EC-4 test.  Yep, I finally finished that stupid study guide book and making index cards too!  Ah…wait, I don’t feel any less stressed than when I started…sigh.  I really hope that this time off from work is going to pay off.  I don’t know what I’ll do if I fail this test.  Yes I do – I’ll cry and feel like the biggest loser ever.  So, the big day is Thursday, May 7 at 1 PM.  It’s a 5 hour test though I hope you don’t have to stay for the entire time.  It might be a good idea for me to use as much of it as possible you know, in order to avoid crying and loserish feelings.  🙂 Positive thoughts…positive thoughts…

Martial Arts:

I got my senior brown belt in TKD and have been wearing it around for about a week now…not much difference.  :)  I received 2 of my 3 stripes on it already thanks to not having to learn a new form.  I’m okay with not having to learn a new form in TKD since I have been reviewing like crazy in Kung Fu and am ready to test.  There will be plenty of new material to learn once I do that.

This past Saturday night Scott and Kelley hosted a UFC party at their house.  I watched about 5 minutes of the first fight before I was drawn to the kitchen where I began to play some crazy drinking game.  Bryan watched the fights, and we both had a awesome time.  I love our friends!!

Amy’s Birthday/A Day in Dallas:

Amy’s birthday was the weekend before last (I’m so behind on posting).  She wanted to go to Medieval Times in Dallas.  Bryan and I left early so we could go to the Dallas Botanical Gardens.  After visiting the gardens, we grabbed coffee, got lost twice, and then met up with everyone at Medieval Times to enjoy the show and dinner.  It was fun.  I had been before, but it’s been awhile.  Amy and Jason even got us all tickets to go through the torture chamber…ouch!  We had an awesome night.

The Diet:

Our new diet has simply become a way of life now.  I realize that it’s only been 2 weeks and 1 day, but I assure you that this is the best eating I have ever done.  Not only do I always enjoy my meals, but I’m satisfied and feel great, which really is the most important thing.

Some things I’ve noticed since beginning the diet:

  • I’ve lost weight (thank goodness – all my clothes fit so much better!)
  • I no longer crave bad foods such as sweets and carbs
  • I’m never stuffed and feeling bloated, horrible, and guilty.
  • I feel amazing in many aspects.
  • I feel less moody.  I have been in much better moods in the last 2 weeks even with PMS.  🙂
  • I’ve had vivid dreams that were easy to remember in the morning.  (A weird one, I know)
  • I’m able to regulate my blood sugar easily now.  Though, I learned that I’m very sensitive to Splenda now and had to switch to Stevia.

We decided that we would give ourselves 2 weeks before our first cheat day.  We have often discussed the cheat day telling each other what we want, but when the day actually arrived neither of us were craving it.  However, we ate it anyway (pizza and milkshakes).  I thought I was gonna die!  I haven’t felt like that in a long time.  I was sooooo full.  I really thought I was going to throw up there for a long time.  My stomach cramped for about 2 hours, and I was miserable the entire time.  We will still have cheat days, but I’m going to have to be careful to take it in in small amounts.  I do not miss the old way of eating.  Shopping and meal preparation are so much easier.  We’ve even started taking vitamins to help ourselves along even more.  Life is good!

I Want My Old Life Back…

April8

…the one where I was able to Facebook, Google Reader, IM, Internet, blog, etc. everyday, multiple times a day.  I miss it so.  🙁 Waaaaaaa….

Ok, enough of that.  I can’t believe how long this studying has been going on.  And I’m seriously wondering if my brain can process much more that this book is shoving at me on each and every page.  It’s making my brain hurt…ouch!  You should see the stack of index cards that I have already made.  Good news – I’m in the middle of the next to the last section.  Bad news – I don’ move that fast through any section.  Sigh.  I need a hug.  I feel guilty if I do anything that isn’t studying, but sometimes my brain just needs time to let everything digest.  I don’t know what the right answer is.

Let me fill you in on life to this point as quickly as possible…

Hail Update:

Our car was totalled by the insurance company after they inspected the hail damage.  Every single part of the exterior would have to be replaced along with the sunroof and windshield.  Fantastic.  Too bad we turned down the gap insurance when we purchased the vehicle.  We will still owe another $4,000 on a car we don’t even own.  Super fantastic.  And we are down to 1 car which actually hasn’t been a problem at all.  We want to continue to do this as long as possible, but that mostly rests on when and what kind of job I FINALLY get.  Sigh (there will be lots of those this post)…

The insurance inspector also said that our roof (yes, the whole thing) needed to be replaced from the hail damage.  Awesome.  Actually, that’s not worrying me so much now that we had a company come look at it.  It should actually work out just fine, but we’ll be waiting until storm season is officially over.

Martial Arts:

I tested for senior brown belt on Saturday morning.  Everything went great.  The belt ceremony is tomorrow (Thursday) night.  I’m so close to black; it’s crazy!  I have been reviewing all of my material for blue belt in Kung Fu and hope to test pretty soon.  I’m still learning Tai Chi sword – a slow process let me assure you.  However, I have been totally digging Tai Chi lately.  I’m really trying to take it seriously and get the things out of it that I’m supposed to.  A good Tai Chi session definitely helps the stress of the day just melt away.  Come try it!  Oh, and I got Kung Fu toe hole again as well as scabby knuckles.  I wear them all with major pride.  😀

Bryan’s Grandparents:

We got Bryan’s Grandparents all moved into their new house.  It feels good to have the house back, and equally nice to know that we have some family to go and visit.  I think this will be awesome on holidays like Thanksgiving where there’s just no time to get in a drive to Mississippi.  We helped them move some furniture, hang a fan, unpack the TV, and put contact paper on the shelves of the pantry, and we were repaid with bbq chicken and homemade mac n cheese.  Yum!  They’re still waiting on the delivery of their furniture (still a couple of weeks out), but at least they’re in the house and able to unpack and begin making it feel like home.

The New Diet:

Bryan and I started a new way of eating Sunday.  We needed something because as of late, we’ve been eating pretty much whatever we wanted whenever we wanted.  It had to stop!  And it has.  I’m feeling awesome after just 3 days on this new lifestyle.  The best thing about this diet is the off days!  While some take this method of eating to the extremes we do not though we are pretty strict.  Sadly there is no cheese, dairy, sugar, carbs, etc. – all the good stuff.  ;)  Just kidding what we’re eating is the good stuff, and it’s proven everyday when I feel more and more awesome.  In fact, the other day I had a burger with no cheese, bun, or fries and I was both full and satisfied.  Awesome!  :)  Still, I’m really looking forward to that off day…hehe.

All Hail Mother Nature!

March29

Yeah….I know (long time no post).  I have to admit that with the house guests, studying, martial arts, and life’s daily demands, I have just had to let some things go.  The blog has been one of these things.  It’s not forever, but I have to keep my priorities (pass the tests being #1).

There isn’t much exciting to report so I won’t do a day by day (you’re welcome!).  Life has just been go, go, go lately with no let up at all.  My energy is drained!  I was asleep by 9:30 PM last night!  Yes, on a Saturday night.  Sad, huh?  Oh well, it was awesome…till I woke up at 3 AM!  I couldn’t go back to sleep so I just decided to get up and get started on some of the many things I need to do.

Let’s see…what major things should I retell?

The Hail Storm:

We got caught in the worst part of the hail storm that hit on Wednesday evening.  This would be completely my fault as we should have been at home not out driving somewhere.  Lesson learned – the hard way…sigh.  We were on 183 when the hail really started to come down.  We were coming on a wreck that had traffic at a stand still.  I knew getting caught in that would be the worst thing to do because I didn’t know how bad the storm was going to get.  I demanded and navigated Bryan (who was driving) over all 3 lanes and even down the cement dividing 183 and the access road and then further through another 3 lanes till we could get on a side street.  After making it off Research, we found a condo complex and pulled in.  However, by this time hail had already cracked the windshield numerous times and completely destroyed the sunroof.  The car also has too many dents to count.  Maybe textured vehicles are the new thing?  I didn’t think so.  :(  As we pulled into the complex, it finally stopped hailing.  There was hail everywhere!  Driving on it was hard – very slippery – as was running on it.  We stopped the car and ran under a covered part of the building.  People began to come out of their condos to see the damage.  A nice couple invited us into their home where we helped them pick up hail and the shards of their once upon a time sky lights.  It was the craziest thing I have ever been through.  Wow!  My car in Cedar Park had a few but barely noticeable dents.  We are currently down to one car as we wait for the insurance company to make their way to us.  I think we need to have someone inspect our roof as well.  Some of the hail we saw was over golf ball sized!

Martial Arts/Other:

Martial arts has been good this week.  I finally finished getting all of the blue belt material in Kung Fu, received another section of the Tai Chi sword form, and received my stripe for my 3 step sparrings in TKD.  I missed class on Wednesday thanks to the storm.  I also missed Thursday and Friday classes thanks to my blood sugar.  I’m hypoglycemic, and even though I do great regulating it for the most part, sometimes it just acts up for seemingly no reason.  I feel horrible when it dips so low, and the only thing that can make me feel better is to just lay down.  You can’t take classes from bed.  I managed to make it to Sam’s photo show later Friday night.  Almost everyone was there which was fun.  We hung out there for a few hours before going to eat and then home.  Sam’s photos looked awesome!

Here is the only picture we took of the night:

mad skills

Last night we took Bryan’s grandparents to Sears for a some home items.  They are going to closing on Monday.  They have a week full of deliveries following that.  It’s pretty exciting!  I can’t wait to see the house filled with all the new furniture.  I think it’s awesome that we finally have family to visit!

Studying:

I have been studying though I don’t nearly get as much done in a day as I need to.  I should have been further along by now.  :(  I hit the social studies section of the material.  So, yeah, I don’t know anything about Texas history.  However, I did buy a book on Texas history yesterday which I have started.  I’m only to the Archaic period, but so far it’s quite an interesting read.  I should be well up to speed on Texas’s past once I read it all (which might not happen before I take the test).  You’ll definitely be seeing me with this book in hand.  :)  I think that even though there is still another couple of sections I need to pour through, I need to sign up for a testing date.  I think doing so will keep me on track by having a constant reminder that the test is actually coming!  I’m getting anxiety just thinking about it.  New topic…

Atley Update

March19

We received an email from the director of the shelter where we adopted Atley and Sweet Pea.  If you don’t remember, Atley was the 2nd dog we adopted (but the only one from the shelter).  He was a terrier, all white except for that totally cute black circle around one eye.  We had to give him back because he needed surgery to correct an old leg injury.  We had been assured that the injury was old and that his limping was just the way he was now.  This was not the case at all.  After having x-rays taken, it was clear that this dog needed surgery if he was ever going to go full speed and not constantly injuring his leg.  We were not able to provide this for the dog and had to surrender him back to the shelter which broke our hearts.  The director emailed us to say that the shelter had amputated his leg, and that he was doing great.  She reported that he was in great spirits and moving like he’d always been a 3-legged dog.  I’m happy to hear that he got what he needed, and I really hope he finds his place in the world.

I Feel Lazy…

March19

I am determined not to let another week go by without posting.

This week has been more of the same: study and chores all day, every day.  It’s getting old, but I dunno what else to do.  I wish I had a study buddy or some place to go so I could put in an 8 hour day like studying was my job.  Staying at home provides too many distractions even though most of them are household chores which are great to get accomplished, but they’re not a necessity to the day.  Diligence needs to be the name of the game.  I’m not happy with my progress so far.  Today I feel so bogged down with what I need to do that I’d rather just sit here and do nothing.  Sigh…that is not an option.  I just feel super lazy today.  However, I have done some studying, I’m currently writing a blog post, and clothes have been washed, dried, and put away.

This week has been about half TKD and half Kung Fu but no Tai Chi.  :(  Well, I did take advantage of the rare opportunity of having the practice room of the Kung Fu school to myself last night to go over 24 twice and pakua once.  It felt good to do them both though I wish I would’ve reviewed some more.  I’m taking tonight off which I shouldn’t feel guilty for because I went to Kung Fu twice yesterday.  However, I always feel bad for doing nothing.  I really want to just hang out and eat dinner with Bryan and his grandparents (a rare treat).  He’s got a yummy dish planned.  I can’t wait to stuff my face with it.  Speaking of, last night after class, a bunch of us went out for sushi which was soooo delicious!  I think Wednesday might become a weekly tradition of eating out with the crew.  The only down side is missing Tai Chi class.

I will most likely be going to Sword class and then racing over to the Kung Fu school for Ryon’s conditioning class (pray for me).  I really wish that sword class was on any other day!  Oh well, I guess if I want to set the class times I’ll have to open my own school.  :P  Saturday morning I’m going to my frist TKD board breaking clinic.  I thought that since I’m only a few testings away there’s no better time to get prepared.  I think we’ll be breaking rebreakables first followed by the real thing!  :D  I’m pretty excited about it.  I have broken the rebreakables before with kicks but have been unsuccesful so far with with hand techniques.  I have never attempted a real board though I hear they’re actually easier.  I just want to do the real thing so I can see how it feels to have wood break from my power.  Sweeet…

So, remember that list of things to do before I’m 30…no…oh well, no worries, because I’m going to review and update it.  I feel that even though I still want to stick to a majority of the things on the list, there are some that I don’t.  I can replace them with other endeavors/goals, but there’s no use to leave something on there that I have no further intentions of doing (kayaking for example – I tried it; it wasn’t for me).  I will post that soon.

For all of my Kung Fu friends please remember that there is a mixed martial arts sparring class at my TKD school.  It’s free!  It’s usually held at 2 P.M.  If you’re interested just let me know, and I can get you added to the email list so you can stay in the loop of what’s going on.  It’s a pretty fun time especially when lots of people show up.  Sparring gear is the only requirement.  You’ll learn something, and that should be enough incentive.  🙂

Songs I’m digging lately:

Heartless – Kanye West

Boom Boom Pow – Black Eyed Peas

iPhone Apps I’m loving at the moment:

Soul Trapper – this game is very unique and though I just started I am loving it!

MusicNeon – I was surprised by how much I loved this game (though I’ve only played the lite version).  I recommend that you turn the sound effects off as I found them quite annoying.

**If you are looking for a site to explore apps then check out apptism.com.  It’s a pretty awesome site that allows you to search over 27,000 apps to discover what they are and how much they cost.  The only down side is that they search feature is a little too exact (it searches for exactly what you put in instead of all words).  It’s annoying, but they’re still in beta so perhaps that’ll change.
